Our History
The Legacy Church of Christ on Mid Cities Blvd. is not a new church. In fact, we are an established group of believers that by the will of God are worshiping in a new location. Prior to worshiping at Mid Cities Blvd. this congregation met at 824 West Pipeline Road in Hurst, Texas for 40+ years.
Steeped in tradition and built on the foundation of the scriptures, we invest our time, money and efforts in families and in relationships with the sole purpose of growing closer to God. After all, the church is not a building; it's people.
In fact, our most valuable assets are our members--people just like you who are discovering the value of relationships with other Christians and more importantly a relationship with God. Right now we're learning what it means to live for tomorrow, to have a purpose each day of our lives, and to depend on each other and the power of God to overcome the setbacks that life can hand us.
Many people have found that this church offers them an opportunity to draw close to God, to develop lasting relationships and to strengthen their families and marriages. We invite you to join us as we learn more about a community of people who are eager to share the excitement and hope they have discovered at the Church of Christ.
Remembering Our Past
Legacy/Pipeline Road Church of Christ was born in the late 1950's when the Brown Trail Church of Christ chose to establish an additional congregation in the mid - cities. With the approval and assistance of the Brown Trail church, a three-acre plot of land was purchased at the intersection of Pipeline Road and Precinct Line Road in Hurst.
April 26, 1959, a group of 56 Christians met in the garage of Bill and Loretta Cox, establishing the new church. Joe Rhoten was asked to become Pipeline's first minister, and during his time with the church, it grew to a family of nearly 250.
Soon after the church was established, Chuck Rhoten and Doc Sparks were selected to serve as elders, and Ralph Willingham was added to that eldership a few months later. The church continued its growth and built classrooms in the early 60s, and a 650 seat worship center in 1968.
The Pipeline Road church established two additional churches in 1963 and 1964. They established the Colleyville Church of Christ, and that church continues at this time. Another group of 72 Christians bought the old Brown Trail Church of Christ building and established the Scotland Hills Church of Christ in 1964. That church met until 1989, and then, returned to be a part of the Pipeline Road church.
Following the work of Joe Rhoten, Jack Holder was the second minister for the church. Over the years, the pulpit ministers have been Leonard Gray, Ed Sanders, Bob Crass, Jerry Campbell, John Bailey, Tom Wacaster, Lawson Mayo, John Anderson, Jim McDoniel and Allan Stanglin. A graduate of the Austin Graduate School of Theology, Allan came to preach at Legacy in June of 2007. Thelma Sellers was the first church secretary. She was followed by Mary Butler, Jo Bulin, Joy Williams, Kelly Willing, Susan Potter, Beth Watson, Terri Henson and Shelli Swafford today, the church is served by Suzanne West, Bonny Sharp and Jackie Crain. Legacy has been served by several youth ministers. Phil Paden was the first. He was followed by Virgil Fry, John Anderson, Brian Herrian, Dub Hall, Jason Brown, and Lance Parrish. Jason Brown is the present youth minister. Jim Randolph served the church in the area of involvement from 1998 until 200. Jennifer Gambill joined the Legacy family in 2009 and serves as the Children's Minister.
In 1992, the church built a classroom building and remodeling the original building. Since the church only had six acres at the Pipeline Road location, a study committee recommended that our next construction be on a new, larger site. The church began meeting in at 8801 Mid-Cities Blvd. in North Richland Hills on September 30, 2001. Since we are no longer on Pipeline Road, the new designation of "Legacy Church of Christ" was adopted. The name is appropriate considering the rich legacy of the Pipeline Road Church of Christ
